Welcome: Our Mission Statement

Thank you for choosing to learn to social dance with us.

We appreciate your interest & your business is valued,

Your satisfaction with our services are most important.

We hope you will continue to train in dance sport for many years forward.

Calendar

Adult Lessons are ongoing year round. Children's Juniors classes follow  Broward county Florida Public School Calendar. We do break for certain holidays or special events. Generally lessons are available 7 days per week, from 11am-9pm.

However Kelly schedules Her Classes, Privates and groups from 1pm-6pm Tuesday thru Sunday. Other Associates are available mornings, evenings, Mondays, etc.

Meeting

You are welcome to drop-in to any studio location, at any time. Some locations have a reception area, others, must be unlocked by staff, and may be closed between breaks. Pick up a current schedule, brochure, or just say hi, see what's new this season. The best way to assist you personally is by appointment, call ahead. If you are in the area, swing by.

There are usually tables and chairs, so if you bring a guest, like a friend or child, they can observe. We invite you to look at the dance floor. Each studio has its own unique ambient charm.

Registration

Registration is currently open for 2007.

New Students are requested to Register at the studio location of their first appointment, & possibly the secondary location. There is no administrative fee to sign up.  We encourage you to list your Goals on the form, if for a special occasion, or particular style, etc... so that we can direct you.  All contact information is private, is not shared with outside parties, such as email, address, etc.

Orientation  Levels

The first meeting is also to evaluate your experience level:

Beginner, intermediate or advanced, aka bronze, silver or gold syllabus.

It is up to the judgment of your instructor as to which level to place you.

Its always a good idea to start at very beginning, even for review patterns, to clean up your technique. Each instructor has their own unique style, preferences, priorities, & expectations of you.  Also the body and mind can be challenged, to expand, grow, & sometimes, the intermediate level is easier, the momentum drives you. Artistically, your personal expression motivates you.

Ability

Some students have more natural athletic ability & pick up quicker. Every figure should be broken down, explained in different learning styles, repeated slowly then real time, until muscle memory execution is developed. Remember, even the best dancers were amateur students for many years before mastering a technique. It is believed that 10 years are required to develop a pro or high level dancer. Be patient. Dedicate yourself. Even a few classes will improve your quality of life.

Admission

We accept all students who inquire. Please advise us in writing if you have any recent or previous injury, surgery, or condition of special precaution, especially toe, foot, ankle, knee, hip or back problem. By enrolling you agree to a waiver of liability, and have proof of medical insurance. Dance movement can be therapeutic because you learn to use muscles to pull weight up, to support the skeletal alignment. Please consult your doctors. Go slow, tread at your pace, be careful, know your own limits, be advised that there is a risk involved with any physical activity.  I recommend students who have a healing surgery, have a broken toe/foot/knee prior to starting, to wait 6months, This can be a good time to break or learn by observation only.

Introduction

During your first session there will be an introductory class which covers 2 popular dance styles. Each dance builds on each other, many positions carry over for related dances. I try to present from simple variations to complex progressions.

Choose Favorite Styles

I also aim to show you at least the one basic step in all the dance styles in a 10 lesson series. I believe beginners should try each dance before choosing to specialize.  Pick divisions to concentrate on for each season, International or American, or 10dance, then  20 dance. At first I studied Latin.  I mistakenly snuffed standard for years thinking it wasn't popular, but now smooth, they are my favorite. I like bolero best always, because I feel I can breathe, the tempo is delightful, the music melodic, rise n fall. Each dance has a character, goes with the percussion of music. Don't discriminate!  Cross-Train!!  Dance-Sport is cosmopolitan. Even country 2 step is awesomely fabulous. There's a learning curve, once you get into it, each new dance takes only 15 minutes to learn. Start with 3 bronze figures for each dance. There's a hundred variations in every dance. Nobody knows all of them!

Learning aids

When I take a new class, I expect to get 70% of the material. The other 30% of exercises I fudge, let go, & smile, until next class, then that's what I concentrate on improving.  Everybody makes mistakes; constructive corrections will help you excel faster.  Reward yourself.

Learning requires 3x repetition. For very beginners, their memory retention can be focused & confident, or well maybe s p a c e y , aka brain overload; if you shut out your inner dialogue, stay centered in the present moment while in class, breathe deep, you will learn easier, also don't allow negative thoughts, (like this is too much, Panic!!!) New can be surprising. Don't feel overwhelmed, think wow!  I provide a pen and paper for you to write your session notes, like the names of the patterns, the timing. I try to use class to cover new material, practice can be done in your own situation. Put some music on at home and jam in private, solo.

Video Recording

I also allow video cameras in private classes. You can bring your tripod, to film the entire lesson, or just the last 15 minute review. I usually record my own privates, I only watch them twice after.  Its amazing what the eyes see, from a different point of view. Plus you might correct yourself, or memorize a routine. Years later you may want a refresher.

Technology

We live in the 21st century. I-pods, laptops, streaming web video lessons, digital music, all great, I love DVD's, and old fashioned stuff.

Scheduling

I usually book one week forward.  Sometimes I can place you in a next day appointment.  I am often booked for the month, and might have one open hour per day only.  My current open slots are Tues.-Sun 2pm-4pm. I know that most adults work till evening, I do not book appointments after 630pm for this season, but one of my other associates can accommodate late evenings. I prefer to have Mondays off from teaching, to run business errands, its office day, I workout, take class myself.  Your appointments are listed on the 56dance homepage. You can look there, and try to piggyback another appointment. If u see I have a wedding couple Sunday, then a Latin lesson after at the same place can work for you.  So afternoons are best for me. I rent space at studios between the scheduled group classes. If I call your appointment in, I have to tell the owner you and I are coming as a reservation, if you re-schedule I have to recall, and that's aggravating to them & embarrassing to me, we could have booked something else more stable, imagine my phone tag! uh, its lost productivity. My time is my inventory. I also team-teach, you may have a substitute, or I may have an assistant. Lessons are semi-private, we focus on one couple at a time, staff or clients may be present.  Our own studio will be open July 1, 2007.

Call me one day before to confirm, so we both remember.

You must call when on your way each lesson.

Honestly, I've remembered, written it down, prepared, looked forward to being there,  4 hours before remembered,... then got involved in a project, lost track of time, looked up, oops, I'm 15 minutes late, and not even there yet, uh oh... it only happens once a year. I have to set an alarm note in my phone to keep up with the random schedule (I'm remodeling my condo, I'm living out of boxes,) And call me when u r on the way, just text message me, see u @... or we'll be there @...

Reservations and Cancellation Policies:

Look at the calendars before you call, narrow down your availability...

I try to keep you at the same time/day, so its predictable and routine.

I do not like cancellations. (guilt trip)  If I reserve a time for you I cannot work elsewhere, for another couple, or start a project, or sleep in.  Its not fair to hold a prime time slot, to have a called in excuse. I've heard the worst: "I'm hangover, I forgot, I'm tied up at work, don't like you anymore, dance is too hard, changed to another studio/teacher, I'm going to the beach instead, dance is too hard, we are too busy". or silence.  The first cancellation/no show without reschedule by either you or myself is forgiven. The second you will be charged, or you are entitled to a refund if prepaid. If you pre-pay, it will be deducted. If you pay as you go, you will pay before I schedule the next appointment.   I try to block privates in a row, like 3-4 students after each other with a half hour window between.

Quality Clients

Its mutual chemistry, Integrity.

Putting my foot down will earn the respect of my golden customers. Being too lackadaisical will only attract lazy students. I'm a world class prima ballerina champion prize full scholarship dance artist aka drama queen, princess Kelly!!!!.  I'm gifted and an awesome instructor,  I'm too busy and too talented for tolerating flakiness!!! Are you ready?  I deserve good quality students only.  I have an outstanding reputation to uphold. I love referrals. I aim to earn your trust. When I work with you, you will look fabulous, and feel confident.  Generally I'm very flexible and understanding, patient and good humored.

Respect OUR Time

Read carefully and thoroughly.  Respect my time, please.   Sometimes we all need to adjust the time, Traffic, rain, waiting for your partner... I'm fairly flexible, but been stood up. Some of the worst student behavior is me driving in stormy traffic to get to the studio, & having a no-show. Or annoying calls to reschedule 3 times in a row. ( hissy fit ha ha !)

Pace Yourself

I can tell if you sound too busy but motivated. Often we get out the gate like a race horse, wanting 10 lessons or 3 times a week, but set a good pace, is once a week, or bi-weekly, sometimes twice a week. Some dedicated students train 2 hours/day.  Lessons can be 45, 60, 90+ minutes. I can sense over saturation.  Even I take breaks, then miss dance & re-subscribe. Social dance students, a once a month treat is right.  Like dinner dance night out. For those on vacation, they have more free time, so might take class 5 days/week. As a training pro, I studied dance 4-8 hours a day, 6 days a week for 3 years intensively. Now I take maintenance class about 2 hours a week and one new material class. I watch dance videos. Teachers are really just advanced lifetime students.

Tardiness

I wait 15 minutes, call if you are running late more than 5 minutes.

I try to schedule a cushion, so if we start quarter till/past, we can go over.  Be 5 min early. I'm often 10 minutes behind schedule for the first session of the day. I'm self employed and do not punch into any clock. If I take 5 minutes on the phone with a new student before I drive, I'm a few minutes behind for good reasons. I try to arrive 10 minutes early.  I treat you the way I want to be treated, flexible, relaxed, but courteous, and always professional. I'm glad you arrive safely, I'm grateful you are with me, and I don't want us to feel rushed. You are never late, you are where god needs you to be.

 Commitment

People think cause I sound cute, sweet & nice & cool & easygoing & friendly, that I will say "ok whatever", but please understand, I'm assertive, direct, in control, disciplined, calculated.  I'm a total beast who  sacrificed a decade of partying in college to bring you higher standards of pure bodily decadence! Actually dance is supposed to be fun, wild passionate, sensual, addictive, & healthy. Don't drop out. EVEN I WHINE & COMPLAIN IN THE GYM, MOAN GROAN, WHAH WHAH.....GETTING INTO THE GROOVE Iz DIFFICULT,   BUT AFTER I FEEL SO GOOD, USUALLY HAD SO MUCH FUN.  Students pay, then are absent, I hold your records for years, I remember every couple who paid no follow up.  About 50% of my lessons are for new students, who just take one class. Hey, I do that, travel, take one class at different places. I aim for 20 lessons with you. Then I refer you to one of my associates. I average 100 new clients annually.

24 Hour Info Line

You can call me on my cell, leave a message, I'm often asleep napping so might sound groggy if I answer, I stay up late, sleep erratically, so calling at 8 am is ok, I probably get up before 6am half the week, then pull all niters working online, to pass out at 4am... also if you need to confirm, if I'm home at 11pm I'll answer, but I work at  popular nightclubs, so my hours are nearly 24/7, I do sleep. I love to sleep if I'm sore muscularly. I sleep with my phone next to me. Sometimes I forget to set the alarm, I say, oh, I'll just nap for an hour, never wake up till 8 hours. Now I'm insomniac, I wake, see the clock every hour, Its common for me to sleep from 6am-noon, half the week.  Call anyway.... if I'm really out if it, I wont hear, it will go to voicemail...sometimes I'm exhausted, the phone rings all day, so I can never r.e.m dream, that gives me a mild headache then I need iced coffee, I dream about dance often, I watch my mind movies.  But if I have a  fun party the night before, 5 hours max, I WAKE UP SO HAPPY, WHOO-HOO, CAN'T WAIT FOR THE MUSIC AND THE PRETTY PEOPLE  954-551-6001

see u soon...

We hope that you will find many joys in class.

We hope that you will find many joys in class.
